Most people grow up thinking of themselves as either a boy or a girl, and they don’t question this “normal” affair. Many of us never actually question our gender, but for some people, this subject is much more complicated. In my work, I have been inspired to place an emphasis on human sexuality and gender identity through my investigation of adolescents changing their physical appearance. My subjects are primarily young males dressed as females. I focus specifically on feminine attributes in my subjects to bring attention to embracing conventional womanly qualities. My use of makeup, seductive poses, and girlish aesthetics attempts to communicate sexual identity, self-confidence, and make the viewer reconsider the typical role of women and men in society. After photographing my subjects I render them in Prismacolor pencils. In these drawings, I exaggerate the color to make the result more extreme. The vibrant colors used along with the exaggeration of sexual characteristics give the viewer the chance to reflect on the idea of stereotypes in gender and identity.
